Gently burbling water, swaying underwater plants, and hundreds of fish flashing their colorful scales and fins at you as they swim by. For most, it’s an undeniably captivating view, and one known to help reduce stress. Bellinghamsters have been able to aquarium-gaze at the Marine Life Center, the Bellingham Cruise Terminal, and at other pet shops and businesses in town. But these spaces weren’t designed for truly unplugging, relaxing, and connecting with fish and fellow community members for as long as you want.

That’s where Emmaquatics Aquarium & Lounge swims into the picture. Opened by Founder Emma Langley in late November 2025, it definitely takes the cake for the coziest pet shop and aquarium lounge in Bellingham. After descending into the recessed downtown storefront on Cornwall Avenue, you’ll find a complimentary fish-themed snack and tea cart. You’ll often be greeted by Langley’s 3-year-old poodle, Toast. Beyond the front desk, the lounge consists of comfy mismatched furniture to rest on and a coffee table for games and mugs. If you’re lucky, Ali the cat will come meowing for pets.

Lining the walls are 27 fish tanks of various sizes, containing scores of fish and plants. Some of Langley’s favorites are Kuhli loaches, little eel-like fish, and banana lillies, which look like they’re growing mini bunches of underwater bananas. Most of the fish and plants are sourced from responsible producers right here in Whatcom County. Almost all of them are for sale to a good home, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy them at Emmaquatics.
“I sell fish, I sell plants, but I am a community space,” says Langley, who wants you to know that Emmaquatics is much more than just a fish store. “I am here for people that need a comfortable seat. I am here for people that are lonely and want a conversation about something, somebody who wants to get off social media…we’re here as a respite for people. We’ve got good snacks, healthy fish, and excellent conversation all the time.”

In addition to being a community gathering space, Emmaquatics encourages learning. Langley gained a ton of knowledge about fish from Larry Oltmann of Clark Feed & Seed, which sadly burned down and closed in 2019. They hope to become a resource in the same way.
“I really, really love it when somebody comes in that doesn’t keep fish,” Langley says. “I think the longer that people spend here, the more questions that they have, and then when [there’s] a positive response, that’s engaging with that curiosity and encouraging it.”

And there’s plenty to learn about! Keeping an aquarium involves a lot of aspects that can appeal to different tastes. Aquascaping, animal care, chemistry, and aesthetics are just a few. Emmaquatics hosts classes and workshops, like a recent aquascaping workshop with Kevin Sell of Simply Aquascaping, to help folks onboard to the hobby. They also run other events, like fiber arts nights and game nights, which you can keep an eye out for on their Facebook page.

When Langley isn’t at the shop, they’re dogwalking, petsitting, consulting on pet care, teaching classes about fishkeeping, or setting up and maintaining aquariums for clients under the company name Emmaquatic’s and Pet Care. They hope that Emmaquatics Aquarium & Lounge continues to grow, and that they can eventually move to a larger space with room for a coffee bar. Until then, all are welcome to come curl up and gaze at the fish for a while, sip some tea, and meet new friends in this creative, comfy space. 1208 Cornwall Ave., Bellingham, 360.713.7644, emmaquatics.com
