Editorial Internships
K&L Media, Inc. offers journalism internships in visual journalism, marketing/public relations, and news/creative journalism. We encourage students to use their unique set of skills and abilities while learning and growing in a fun yet professional environment.
The journalism internship will give interns the opportunity to write on a variety of different topics, as well as experiment with different writing styles. Interns will gain experience writing, researching, taking pictures, and fact-checking for an upscale lifestyle magazine. Most importantly, interns will get published in a premier regional magazine and walk away with editorial clips that look great on a resume. Working on your own, as well as in the office with the rest of the editorial staff, you will gain valuable experience participating in the editorial process from start to finish.
Applicants may be working toward majors other than journalism and public relations. We’ve had interns who were pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in English literature, publishing, or creative writing; graduates are also accepted. Optimal candidates have experience working in school magazines and/or newspapers; a strong interest in magazine writing; good phone and research skills; and the ability to multitask. Experience with InDesign, Photoshop, and digital photography is a plus but not required.
The position is unpaid, requires a minimum of 3 1/2 months and 15 hours a week between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays. Students fulfilling their internship requirements are encouraged to apply and will be given first priority. K&L Media makes every effort to accommodate work and school schedules. The dates available are as follows:
Fall: 10/1-12/15
Winter: 1/2-3/15
Spring: 4/1-6/15
Summer: 7/1-9/15
Marketing & PR
Bellingham Alive marketing/PR interns are detail-oriented, ready to assist and learn the day-to-day operations of a marketing/PR professional in the publishing industry, and working towards a degree in marketing/PR, advertising, communication or business.
During your internship, you can expect to assist with marketing/PR/event coordination and production; media tracking; creating and assembling sales materials; distribution of marketing collateral; data entry; creating and implementing social media campaigns; and managing the weekly digital newsletter. Marketing/PR interns may also be asked to support account executives on specific projects, and they are required to participate in team meetings.
This is an unpaid internship. Internships range from three to six months. Work schedules are flexible and can accommodate class schedules or other commitments. School credit can be achieved with appropriate paperwork from their educational institution.
Graphic Design Internships
The graphic design internship will allow students to use their skills to create original designs, advertisements, promotional materials, and much more. Further, it will open the door for them to practice interfacing with clients, co-workers, and all stakeholders involved in a publishing business, as well as allowing them to publish their work in a regional magazine and on the web, resulting in great clips they can show prospective future employers.
Applicants should be working toward a bachelor’s or master’s degree in graphic design, publishing, or photography. Candidates must have working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and MAC OS, and the ability to multitask and work with others.
