Pretty Penny Clothing & Guerrero Hair Studio

If you’re looking to revamp your look, head to the corner of Elm and Monroe Streets in Bellingham, where you’ll find Pretty Penny Clothing and Guerrero Hair Studio. The vintage clothing boutique and hair studio are owned by Bellingham native, Sarah Dunbar, and her husband, Nick St. Mary, respectively. The pair met in Oakland, but moved to Bellingham in 2016 to be near Dunbar’s family and find a calmer pace of life for themselves and their daughter, Vienna.

For two years, the couple operated Pretty Penny’s original Oakland location from Bellingham, taking frequent trips to California to check on the store. When the travel became too much, they decided to reincarnate the store in Bellingham.

“There isn’t anything quite like what we do here in town,” St. Mary says. “[We’re] a lifestyle shop…It’s an art, for us, what we do.”

EVERYONE IS WELCOME
Dunbar, who is warm and cheerful, carefully selects every item in Pretty Penny with the customer in mind. “I want to give people what they want,” she says. This means an array of gently-used vintage jeans, jumpers, and dresses as well as a curated collection of new products such as sunglasses, socks, natural apothecary items, and bralettes.

For Dunbar, Pretty Penny is about more than clothing—it’s about building and connecting with community. “We’ve retained probably 60% of our Oakland customers,” she explains, referring to those who still shop through Pretty Penny’s popular online store.

Dunbar strives to create a safe shopping experience for anyone and everyone. “I don’t follow people around, I don’t… judge.” If customers do want help, she’s ready to spring into action, helping people pick clothes that make them feel good. “I really enjoy getting to see how people feel once they find the right size, or find something they would have never picked out themselves.”

NATURAL STYLE
Before opening his studio next to Pretty Penny this past August, St. Mary cut hair at Argyle Hair Salon. His new studio is bright and cheerful, with rust-colored styling chairs and a beverage station where clients can enjoy coffee or tea. “In the winter time in Bellingham it’s gloomy… I want everything as happy and comfortable as I can make it.”

St. Mary strives to use organic, paraben-free, and chemical- free products. “I want to create a clean-air space for people who have smell and scent sensitivities,” he says. He specializes in straight razor haircuts, a more organic, natural way to cut hair. He also does color.
