Savor the San Juans

A long with some of the most scenic vistas in the state, the San Juan Islands are known for their fertile farmlands, vibrant culinary scene, and active artist community. Every fall, this “gourmet archipelago” welcomes visitors to learn about the flavors of the islands and what makes its community so unique at Savor the San Juans (September 21 to November 9). This seven-week event features farm tours, wine tastings, wine dinners, a beer festival, and two film festivals.

MEET A FARMER

The farm tours on San Juan Island (September 21 and 22), Orcas Island (September 28 and 29) and Lopez Island (October 5 and 6) cover a wide range of activities and attractions ranging from herb cultivation and sheep shearing to heritage wheat and draft horses. At each location, visitors get a glimpse into farming life along with activities specific to that farm, which may include opportunities to taste food and meet farm animals.

TASTE THE ISLANDS

To sample what the islands have to offer, visitors can attend Bite of the San Juans (October 27) in Friday Harbor. Admission is free, and bites (starting at $3) showcase the best flavors from Orcas, Lopez, and San Juan Island. Nibble on a few tastes while waiting in line for the ferry or pop in during the Friday Harbor Film Festival.

For more, attend a wine tasting dinner at Coho Restaurant and Madrone Cellars Wine Dinner, or attend Hops on the Rock on Orcas Island, where more than 20 Northwest brewers showcase their beer.

WATCH A FILM, BE INSPIRED

During this event, the Friday Harbor Film Festival (fhff.org) shows more than 30 documentary films, including feature-length and short films that enlighten and entertain. The event also hosts an awards night and filmmaker’s forum.

Film showings take place at five different locations in downtown Friday Harbor; tickets are purchased as a punch card. The three-day event (October 25 to October 27) kicks off with an opening night gala to honor all filmmakers in attendance and show a special screening of “Ghost Fleet.”
