When Mark Wheatley approached A1DesignBuild, he wanted a legacy home. Something intelligent, beautiful, and future-proof; a residence that would set a new standard for sustainable building in Whatcom County.

We took that vision one step further by designing a net-positive home that actually produces more energy than it consumes—smarter, healthier, and more sustainable for all.
From its 13-inch-thick thermal walls and two 400-gallon rainwater cisterns, to a highly efficient heat-recovery system and use of solar, the Cable Street Project is a model of high-performance green design. Every element was chosen for longevity, health, and environmental impact through innovation and an eye on the future.

The results are measurable:
- Solar provides 112% of this home’s electricity. Excess energy is returned to the grid.
- 800 gallons of rainwater are stored and used for laundry and irrigation.
- The house uses 1000 cubic feet of water per person annually, which is 25% of the Bellingham average.
- Triple-pane windows framed in deep clay-plastered wells create an old-world warmth while naturally cleaning indoor air and providing unparalleled insulation.
- Lime plaster, cork, linoleum, and PaperStone are the primary materials—all sustainable and non-toxic to make the home breathable and healthy.
- Plastic recycling systems and compost minimize trash output far beneath the norm.

Comfort combined with efficiency were always front and center, but beauty that spoke to the owner also had to be achieved. By working closely with Mark around his vision, we were able to build something truly special.
