When a Whidbey Island couple looked to expand their home’s livable space, their attention turned to what was beneath their feet: a daylight basement and crawlspace with untapped potential. They envisioned more than just additional square footage. It needed to connect the basement to the stunning view and serve as the primary spot for entertaining friends and family. Working closely with interior designer Robin Daly and the team from Cascade Custom Homes, they set out to create a fully realized retreat—moody, luxurious, and made for intentional living.
“Every decision was about creating easy comfort without sacrificing relaxed style,” says Daly.
The renovation transformed the lower level into a series of layered spaces. Each area has a distinct purpose, yet all are connected by a cohesive design vision. At the heart of the project is the curated wine cellar that invites you in to share a bottle. Nearby, a cozy media room offers the perfect spot to unwind, while flexible living zones create space for guests, hobbies, and quiet reflection.

The design is anchored in a palette inspired by the surrounding landscape. Earthy neutrals, deep woods, and subtle texture echo the natural beauty outside while cultivating a refined, welcoming atmosphere indoors. The goal was to ensure the addition felt seamlessly integrated with the rest of the home, not like a contemporary add-on that might quickly feel dated.
The result is a space that feels tucked away and grounded, yet elevated. It is a private retreat for the homeowners and a testament to the power of design to reimagine how a home can feel and function.

This project recently earned two interior design awards, one national and one regional. The recognition speaks to the craftsmanship and creativity behind the transformation, as well as the universal appeal of turning unused space into a place that truly feels like home.
