“We are so thankful that you are here.” It’s a phrase I hear almost daily from first-time visitors to Sew Inspired Fabrics- often spoken with a kind of relief.
Since opening our doors in the heart of Fairhaven last November, we at Sew Inspired Fabrics have quickly become a destination for sewists throughout the Pacific Northwest, welcoming guests from Vancouver, B.C., Seattle, and beyond. Many arrive starved for high-quality fabrics and the kind of tactile shopping experience that simply cannot be replicated online.
At a time when independent fabric stores are becoming increasingly rare, especially those devoted primarily to apparel, Sew Inspired Fabrics was created to thoughtfully fill that space. I envisioned a store that feels both elevated and welcoming, where creativity is nurtured, craftsmanship is honored, and customers feel inspired the moment they walk through the door.
My own sewing story began early, back when I earned my first Brownie-Girl Scout badge under the guidance of my mother, an accomplished seamstress who learned to sew out of necessity. By middle school, I was making many of my own clothes and quietly dreaming of a future in fashion design.
Life led me first into environmental planning and later into business leadership as a longtime co-owner of the Bellingham Training & Tennis Club. It was only when I “retired” as the general manager that I returned to sewing for myself; only to discover there were no apparel-focused fabric stores between Vancouver and Seattle. Ordering online often felt like a compromise; without the ability to touch a fabric, see how it drapes, or understand its character, something essential was missing.
I suspected others were feeling that absence, too.
Sew Inspired Fabrics grew from a desire to create the store I had been searching for: a place offering exceptional materials, thoughtful guidance, and the education needed to build a wardrobe you love and are proud to wear. More than anything, I didn’t want sewing your own clothes to become a lost art.
Today, the shop is defined by its carefully curated selection of natural fiber fabrics (cotton, linen, silk, wool, Tencel, ramie) alongside a distinctive collection of one-of-a-kind deadstock fabrics. These high-quality, often designer textiles were originally produced for the fashion industry but left unused due to overproduction or seasonal shifts. By reclaiming them, we help prevent remarkable materials from entering the waste stream while offering makers access to fabrics rarely available to home sewists.
Today’s sewists want responsibly sourced fabrics, certainly, but they are also seeking connection, inspiration, and the simple pleasure of holding fabric and imagining what a length of cloth might become.
There is something deeply meaningful about making your own clothing. It encourages individuality, creates intention around your wardrobe, and reconnects us with the value of garments made with care.
As more visitors plan day trips around a stop in Fairhaven, lingering in the neighborhood’s shops, cafes, and waterfront, I am reminded that independent stores still matter. They shape the character of a place, bring people together, and quietly foster creativity.
Returning to my first love of sewing and sharing that with others through the store feels poetic. And each time someone pauses before leaving to say, “I’m so glad you’re here,” I’m reminded exactly why Sew Inspired Fabrics exists.
