When I arrived at the door, she reached out, smiled, and pulled me inside—an easy, familiar gesture marking my second visit to their waterfront condo in Bellingham. Our initial meeting had been just as warm, a lively exchange of ideas that uncovered a wealth of possibility within the home’s older, compartmentalized layout. Once divided into a few small, disconnected rooms, the space was aching for a renovation that would welcome in a more modern aesthetic and allow the view, and the clients’ lives, to breathe.

Both homeowners had lived, worked, and studied across the United States and Europe, gathering experiences, inspirations, and stories along the way. Their collection of art and objects, many crafted by the owner during years in art school and beyond, would fill the condo with a quiet, personal richness. It was clear from the beginning that the redesign would not simply refresh a space—it would frame a life beautifully lived.

Modern, clean lines set the tone, shaped thoughtfully by a location where the ocean dominates the horizon and the natural shoreline stretches across the bay. It was the ideal directive—minimal yet deeply connected to its surroundings. To balance this, we layered in depth and richness, opting for a sophisticated palette that echoes the ever-changing colors of the water while remaining grounded and organic. The result is a refined canvas capable of welcoming a full spectrum of accent hues through art and decorative elements.

The result, as evident in the photos, is a harmonious and richly layered space that feels entirely unique to its homeowners. Involving my clients in the creative direction challenges me to grow, both as a designer and as a person. And that, quite simply, is why I don’t do staging.
