Sofie Hynes has been an independent jeweler in Bellingham for around three decades, and her business, Sofie’s Goldmine, operated in a repurposed gas station on State Street for the last 19 years. In late August, Sofie’s moved to a bottom-floor storefront in the Hotel Leo building on Cornwall Avenue.
“I felt like it was time to take this opportunity,” says Hynes, whose previous space was scheduled for demolition. “Everyone at the Hotel Leo is very nice … I think we’re going to have a great partnership.”

Although the new location is smaller than the last, Hynes renovated it into a sophisticated space, with jewelry displayed in wall-mounted boxes and two large glass cases. Colorful pieces of abstract art by Hynes’s friend, local artist Renee Noelle Cheesman, are also on display.
Hynes has a lifetime of experience, having started her jeweler’s apprenticeship at age 14 in Sweden. She sells curated pieces from other brands as well as her own jewelry, which combines modern and organic design. Many locals trust her with repairs, and she always offers free inspections and cleanings—since opening, she’s been able to offer timely services to Hotel Leo guests, too. 1230 Cornwall Ave., Bellingham, 360.647.5013, sofiesgoldmine.com
