Join members of Vancouver-based Japanese Gardeners Association to learn about the history, essence, and concepts behind Kare-San-Sui, or Japanese dry rock gardens. In this hands-on workshop, participants will receive all the materials needed to make their own dry rock gardens. Expert gardeners Tim Nishibata, Hiro Okusa, Kumpei Wakino, and Toshiyuki Izawa will lead an interactive lecture, sharing their expertise in landscaping dry rock gardens in commercial and private spaces. Then, participants can experiment with their new knowledge of dry rock gardens by arranging their own. Our guides will be sharing tips and techniques along the way! Experience the joy, serenity, and mindfulness through this Zen exercise.
All materials will be provided, but students are encouraged to bring rocks for their gardens, too. Ideal rocks are 2-3 inches in size and irregularly shaped (vs round and smooth).
$50 museum members / $60 non-members; limited to 12 participants
