Island Makes 2019 Best-Destination List
Orcas Island, one of our favorite hometown getaways, has snagged a spot on the New York Times’ “52 Places to Go in 2019” list.
Orcas is the only Pacific Northwest destination recognized, a pretty big feat for an island that only measures around 57 square miles. Coming in at No. 33, the Times’ travel editors describe Orcas’ draw to foodies, saying the island “has gained fame in recent years for its impressive tide-to-table culinary scene and experimental wine.” They mention Doe Bay Wine Company, and restaurant Hogstone’s Wood Oven, home to James Beard-nominated chef Jay Blackinton, and Hogstone’s upscale counterpart, Aelder.
And if you’re wondering, no, the Times doesn’t fail to mention that Oprah now owns a massive 43-acre estate on the tiny island. While we think Orcas would be an equally interesting destination without Oprah, it doesn’t hurt to have “a potential run-in with a massive star” on your tourism brochures.
Along with restaurants and Oprah, the Times mentions the luxury suites at the Outlook Inn, which provide a killer view of Puget Sound, and recreational activities at Moran State Park. If you need a break from the mainland, better get to Orcas before the New Yorkers do.
