SUMMARY:Radiant Reflections: Claire Simpson\, Andrew Lui Robinson\, & Carly McCartney
DESCRIPTION:MAKE.SHIFT NOVEMBER ART WALK: \nRadiant Reflections: Claire Simpson\, Andrew Lui Robinson\, & Carly McCartney \nFor the month of November\, Make.Shift Gallery is excited to feature three Bellingham-based artists who incorporate light and shadow into intriguingly ethereal sculptures and installations. “Radiant Reflections” will feature works by Claire Simpson\, Andrew Lui Robinson\, and Carly McCartney. \nClaire Simpson’s “re(fr)act” series is all about the viewer. Attendees are encouraged to shine their cellphones through these interactive sculptures and discover infinitely different ways to view and relate to light and color. Andrew Lui Robinson’s pieces use symbolic processes\, like burning and chemical reactions\, to create poetic sculptures that explore existential tensions and our relationship with language. Carly McCarney’s ongoing interactive installation\, “Instruments of Hostages\,” memorializes the dead from reported mass shootings in the U.S.\, from 1997 to 2019. \nMcCartney mass produces paper birds sculptures to protest the mass production of guns in the U.S. Viewers are encouraged to engage with the sculptures and the shadows they cast on the gallery walls. The artist encourages audience-collaborators to “treat the installation as if it is a playground full of life\, potential and curiosity.” \nPlease join us for opening night on First Friday Art Walk on November 1st from 6-10pm. For more information about the Art Walk or Make.Shift please visit our website at makeshiftproject.com or contact Jessyca Murphy at gallery@makeshiftproject.com. \nMake.Shift November Art Walk \nCOST: Free!\nCONTACT: Jessyca Murphy gallery@makeshiftproject.com\nIMAGES: “November Art Walk.jpg” \nMake.Shift Art Space is a DIY art and music venue dedicated to innovative alternative art and music. SUMMARY:Fast Track Advanced: The Step-Bezel Ring
DESCRIPTION:This will be a two-day\, advanced class to help you explore a new bezel technique for a ring. A bezel is a band of metal\, Sterling Silver or Fine Silver\, which is formed around the edge of the stone to hold it in place. Usually it is made as a box bezel with a flat piece of metal supporting the flat cabochon and connecting the bezel and the ring. In this class\, the bezel will be an integral part of your design. We will fabricate a step-bezel to form a raised setting for your chosen cabochon or faceted gem. This requires careful measuring and fine motor skills. We will cover how to choose and fabricate the correct bezels for your gems. The ideal choice for this type of setting is a shallow cabochon or a faceted gem like an emerald cut shape. Some gems will be available from the instructor as needed. Instructor: Marie-Claire Dole. Deadline to register: Sunday Oct 6th at 12pm. Prerequisites: Open to adults (18 years and older) and student must have good basic skill in jewelry fabrication. Saturday & Sunday\, October 19 & 20\, 2019\, 10am-5pm. Course fee: $250.00 plus $30-$50 materials fee (depending on your needs).\nBellingham Metal Arts Guild is a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization promoting the Metal Arts through classes\, workshops\, lectures & more at our studio/education facility in the Squalicum Harbor Mall.\nFull details and to Register go to: Current.BMAG-WA.org

SUMMARY:Cyber security for Bellingham families and neighborhoods
DESCRIPTION:Americans are buying and installing smart speakers\, virtual assistants\, smart electrical plugs\, smart garage door openers\, smart light bulbs and connected children’s toys at an unprecedented rate. We know to lock the physical doors to our homes\, but fewer people appreciate how smart devices can act like unlocked doors for cyber criminals into our homes\, our social networks\, and our bank accounts. \nThe lack of communications and understanding between professionals who work in cyber security and their neighbors who don’t is one of the reasons cyber crime has grown for fifteen years. There are simple things we can each do to protect our families against the risks to our privacy and security. \nIn this session\, you’ll learn:\n– how cyber criminals hack into smart devices\, bank accounts\, and cloud services\n– two easy ways you can protect your family’s accounts \nThis session includes a live hacking demo\, so please bring your mobile phone (Android or Apple) if you’d like to participate. This is not a sponsored event and there is no cost. Any solutions recommended will be free\, and there will be time for questions at the end of the presentation. \nAbout the presenter: Kayne McGladrey\, CISSP is a member of the IEEE. He’s been published in USA Today\, Reader’s Digest\, Fast Company\, the Philadelphia Inquirer\, and many cyber security publications. He’s #2 on the top twenty worldwide thought leaders in cyber security\, and lives in Bellingham with his family\, over fifty smart devices\, and a handful of robots.
