SUMMARY:History of Skagit Punk
DESCRIPTION:Listen up\, crusties\, cavers\, wavers\, skaters\, hardcore kids\, and anarchists: This is your story. \nSkagit Valley music legend Shane Gildnes has been part of the Northwest punk scene for decades\, most notably as the driving force behind both Stagnant Water and Fanny Alger. Now\, finally\, the Lincoln has caught up with him\, and he’s hitting our stage with both of these bands for a night of noisy music interspersed with Shane’s stories of Skagit’s punk rock scene from ever since it was a thing — when we were all smaller and our hair was weirder. \nEveryone is welcome! Learn about Mount Vernon’s counter-culture legacy and party like it’s 1989. \nRemember: if it’s too loud\, you’re just not deaf enough yet.

SUMMARY:World Premiere of "Love Letters"
DESCRIPTION:Join Western Washington University in partnership with Cascadia International Women’s Film Festival in welcoming Catharine R. Stimpson\, Elizabeth Wood and Greta Schiller for “Love Letters”: A Film Premiere and Panel Discussion on Friday\, March 8th\, 2024 at 7:30PM at Western Washington University’s Performing Arts Center Mainstage. \nThe 39-minute documentary is a profound story of love and activism between renowned professor\, feminist scholar and Bellingham native\, Dr. Catharine R. Stimpson and musicologist Dr. Elizabeth Wood at the forefront of the narrative. The film highlights Wood’s landmark legal victory in Australia during the 1970s to gain custody of her children.\nIn the film\, both women\, now in their 80s\, reflect on their experiences during a time when living authentically\, loving apologetically\, and fighting for fundamental human rights was considered radical. Motivated by the current younger generation’s noble demonstrations of defiance\, Wood and Stimpson will share their story with our community. \nWatch the trailer here:\n“Love Letters” Trailer (with captions) (youtube.com) \nDiscussion after Film \nThe film will be followed by a panel discussion with the Stimpson and Wood and director Schiller. Audrey Sager\, CASCADIA Board President whose New York City law practiced focused on matrimonial law\, will moderate. \nStimpson is known nationally for her groundbreaking contributions to the study of women and gender. She is a founder of feminist criticism and the feminist journal\, Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society. Wood is recognized as one of the pioneers who established new directions in modern musicology in addition to being a novelist. \nTickets are free and available here now for this special event which is open to the public. Contact the WWU PAC Box Office for ticketing questions or phone (360) 650-6146. \n516 High Street\nBellingham\, WA 98225

SUMMARY:MET LIVE: LA Forza del Destino
DESCRIPTION:Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts Verdi’s grand tale of ill-fated love\, deadly vendetta\, and family strife\, with stellar soprano Lise Davidsen following a string of recent Met triumphs with her role debut as the noble Leonora\, one of the repertory’s most tormented—and thrilling—heroines. Director Mariusz Treliński delivers the company’s first new Forza in nearly 30 years\, setting the scene in a contemporary world and making extensive use of the Met’s turntable to represent the unstoppable advance of destiny that drives the opera’s chain of calamitous events. The distinguished cast also features tenor Brian Jagde as Leonora’s forbidden beloved Don Alvaro\, baritone Igor Golovatenko as her vengeful brother Don Carlo\, mezzo-soprano Judit Kutasi as the fortune teller Preziosilla\, bass-baritone Patrick Carfizzi as Fra Melitone\, and bass Soloman Howard as both Leonora’s father and Padre Guardiano. For the final three performances\, soprano Elena Stikhina and mezzo-soprano Maria Barakova take over as Leonora and Preziosilla.
