SUMMARY:An Evening of Belly Dance
DESCRIPTION:Come and see some of the fantastic\, dramatic and breathtaking belly dance that Bellingham has to offer! Plus special guest\, David Metz on the arabic tabla (drum)\, who will be traveling from Seattle to perform for us this evening! \nCome early to enjoy a beverage at the Firehouse Cafe before the doors open for the show at 6pm. The show will start right at 6:30pm in the beautiful Firehouse Performing Arts and Events Center – an old firehouse turned small theatre – a short walk from the Historic Fairhaven District. \nThis evening will be a sparkling evening of raqs sharqi (oriental dance)\, fusion\, and middle eastern folk dance; while our guest Toastmaster will share little bites of history and culture of the music and the dance. \nPerformers for the evening include: \nRachel Carter – Owner of Rachel Belly Dances here in Bellingham\, Rachel is a playful performer who may make you feel like dancing along! She is sure to bring energy and sparkle to her performance. \nDamiana Dance Company – Led by Cara Cressell and Jen Cerdena\, and joined by the Azara dancers\, these talented performers will bring a modern style of belly dance that was created here in the U.S. called Fat Chance Belly Dance (FCBD) style.\nThis style’s signature is using cues among the dancers to improvise their dance\, while staying in synchrony with each other. Come and watch\, you would never know that they are improvising! \nSeattle Guests \nDavid B. Metz – The ‘dancers’ drummer’! David has been playing middle eastern music and drumming for dancers’ drum solos for many years! Never seen a drum solo?! You are in for a treat! A drum solo is a completely improvised duet between a drummer and a dancer. Fun\, fast and thrilling\, this is not an act to miss! \nWisteria a former Bellingham resident\, Wisteria does it all! She dances fusion\, Egyptian Folkloric and raqs sharqi. Wisteria is a captivating dancer who dances and teaches in Seattle. Don’t miss her\, or her legendary hair tosses\, while she is in Bellingham! \nAnyelle – Bellingham grown and a nationally recognized Oriental dancer\, Anyelle won the title of Miss Belly Dance USA in 2014. This dynamic dancer always impresses! \nCheck out our Facebook Event page at https://www.facebook.com/events/317256060437253 \nTickets now for sale at https://rachelbellydances.brownpapertickets.com/

SUMMARY:Conversation & Reading with Author Kevin Donner
DESCRIPTION:Working in senior care isn’t for everyone. It isn’t even for most. But for those rare few who find their passion in this multifaceted industry\, the sense of job and life satisfaction are limitless. So too\, however\, can be the pervasive sense of loss and hopelessness. \nPoopy Fingers: One Person’s Account of Working in the Delightfully Strange World of Assisted Living follows the lessons\, the mistakes\, the smiles\, and the tears as Kevin Donner stumbles upon his own passion for working with\, and for\, this often undervalued and ignored demographic. \nThis book shows the daily physical and emotional needs of the residents\, but more importantly\, explores the varying stages of life familiar to so many of us. Come join us for a conversation intended to help start your own conversations with loved ones concerning issues around aging.

SUMMARY:Puget Sound LYS Tour
DESCRIPTION:Founded in 2006 by a few shop owners who liked to party\, the first Puget Sound LYS Tour included 12 shops. With our region well known for quality yarn shops\, the Tour quickly grew in size. In addition to being the first of it’s kind\, we believe we are also the largest Yarn Store Tour in the Nation. \nIn 2006\, the Tour began as a long\, three-day weekend. Then it expanded to four days. For the 6 years\, it spanned five days with 25 shops. The 15th Anniversary Tour in 2020 was cancelled because of COVID-19\, but we celebrated the Anniversary one year later with 20 shops\, spanning 10 days! This year we will be returning to our more traditional\, five day schedule. \nEach year\, the shops gather and work together to plan a fabulous Tour with prizes\, free patterns\, and discounts. \nOur goal is to help our customers learn\, grow\, and become successful in the art and craft we all love. That’s the principle that’s been driving the LYS Tour all these years. That\, and we all like to party. \nPlease join us May 11th – 15th 2022! \nhttps://www.lystour.com/\nlystour@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Everett Philharmonic Orchestra Listener’s Choice Concert
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Everett Philharmonic Orchestra for our season finale Sunday\, May 1 at 3pm in the Everett Civic Auditorium when Dr. Paul-Elliot Cobbs conducts two of Aaron Copland’s most popular works: Fanfare for the Common Man and Appalachian Spring\, as well as additional works by Beethoven and American composer Wayne Barlow. This concert\, graciously sponsored by Northwest LED Lighting\, is our annual selection of audience favorites in the “Listener’s Choice” concert. \nAt the outset of the concert\, Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man gives a spine-tingling affirmation of the strength of the “Common Man” – much in evidence in our lives in these turbulent times. His beloved Appalachian Spring is a more comforting and joy-filled reminder of happy seasons that lie ahead of us. After intermission the Everett Phil’s principal oboist Laurie Swanson will be featured in American composer Wayne Barlow’s The Winter’s Passed. Barlow’s most enduring work is a neoclassical fantasy based on southern folk tunes inspired by a verse from the Songs of Solomon. We’ll end the afternoon and close out our season with Beethoven’s bright and cheery Symphony No. 6. In this pastoral symphony\, we’ll join Beethoven on a walk in the countryside outside Vienna to a babbling brook and merry gathering\, briefly interrupted by a thunderstorm before enjoying a shepherd’s song played in thanks for the warm sun of spring. Tickets on sale now for $10 – 25. Mask required for everyone in attendance. Please check our website for the most up-to-date COVID policies. For more info visit us at EverettPhil.org\, email info@everettphil.org\, subscribe to our FaceBook page or call (425) 585-8975.

SUMMARY:Katerina Canyon and Raúl Sánchez\, Poetry Reading – IN PERSON
DESCRIPTION:Katerina Canyon and Raúl Sánchez will be doing an in-person poetry reading at Village Books in Bellingham\, WA on April 16\, 2022 from 7:00 – 8:00PM. \nKaterina Canyon is an Award-Winning Poet\, Best Selling Author\, civil rights activist\, and essayist. She will be reading from her new poetry collection Surviving Home\, which was released on November 9\, 2021. Surviving Home is a collection of poems that serve as a memoir of the trauma she experienced and overcame. Concisely arresting and challenging the beliefs of family and the fantasies of tradition\, the poems in Surviving Home show that home is a place that you endure rather than a place where you are nurtured. With unyielding cadence and unparalleled sadness and warmth\, Katerina Canyon contemplates the prejudice and limitations buried in a person’s African American heritage: parents that seem to care for you with one hand and slap you with the other\, the secret desires to be released from the daily burdens of life\, as well as the surprising ways a child chooses to amuse herself. Finding resilience in the unexpected\, this collection tears down the delicate facades of family. Katerina Canyon is a 2021\, 2020\, and 2019 Pushcart Prize Nominee. Her stories have been published in The New York Times and The Huffington Post. \nRaúl Sánchez will be reading from his new poetry collection When There Were No Borders. These poems present and re-present our “tongue\,” our “language\,” our “culture and pride.” Steeped in history and “blood blood blood” unforgotten and dignified\, these poems are never what you expect yet are as familiar as an ancestral landscape. Deeply layered like culture itself\, this book es una flor\, multi-petalled\, many-voiced – sin frontera and utterly unique. From rich love poems to Neruda-esque declamaciónes to canciones and cantos\, this book represents as we were\, and are\, When There Were No Borders\, by presenting the multiverse that is US of America through the voice of one\, Raúl Sánchez\, crossing borders. \nRaúl Sánchez is the former City of Redmond Poet Laureate 2019 – 2021. He teaches poetry in Spanish through the Seattle Arts and Lectures (WITS) program\, also through the Jack Straw Educational Project. In the last three years he volunteered for PONGO Teen Writing at the Juvenile Detention Center. He runs the “Poetry in the Park” event at the Meadowbrook Pond in NE Seattle. His work has appeared in a multitude of journals\, magazines\, and anthologies. His new collection When There Were No Borders was released by Flower Song Press\, McAllen Texas July 2021. His latest book is All Our Brown Skinned Angels. \nVillage Books is located at 1200 11th St\, Bellingham\, WA 98225.
