SUMMARY:"Twisp: The Power of Community" to screen at FireHouse Arts and Events Center
DESCRIPTION:“Twisp: The Power of Community” (www.twispmovie.com) is a 40-minute documentary exploring the qualities that enable one rural community—well-known to most Bellingham residents—to thrive\, when so many others are dying\, or being swallowed up by development. It also answers the question\, “In a society that seems increasingly polarized and confrontational\, how do some communities manage to get along?” \nStarting with a telling of the town’s Native/white reconciliation process\, the film also shares Twisp’s successful opposition to a controversial mega ski resort development; its homegrown safety net—from a teen suicide prevention program to a food bank and\, more recently\, an affordable housing initiative. It also describes the town’s recovery from back-to-back summers of devastating wildfires and its investment in art and local artists as an economic development strategy. \nThe film has won a handful of awards\, including “Official Selection” laurels from Impact Docs and WRPN.tv’s Women’s International Film Festival\, and “Exceptional Merit” awards from Docs Without Borders and Short\, Tight\, and Loose Global Film Festival Competition. The director\, Leslee Goodman\, will be on hand for a Q&A following the showing. \nTickets are $10/adults; $5/kids\, available at the door starting at 6:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Mary Jo Maute and Denise Snyder Show at Dakota Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Two adventurously creative Whatcom County artists\, Denise Snyder and Mary Jo Maute share the Dakota Art Gallery from September 6–29\, 2019. Snyder\, a sculptor and Maute\, a painter share similar approaches to art\, as well as a love for vivid color\, flowing movement\, and natural forms. \nMaute is an improvisational painter. Floating luminous plant\, animal\, and figurative compositions convey memories\, the passage of time\, and life’s interconnectedness. For Snyder’s sculptures\, peeled branches and metal are the structure. Delicate translucent papers and other fibers woven into the pieces emphasize the harmony\, strength\, and fragility of the natural world. \nThe exhibit can be seen at the Gallery through September 29th. The gallery is free and open daily 9:00 AM–6:00 PM and Sunday: 12:00 PM–5:00 PM

SUMMARY:Chanting for Transformation
DESCRIPTION:Mantra is a ritualized form of singing where a particular intention is held and a particular state is invoked. Mantras have been used for thousands of years by many cultures across human history. The Vedic sciences are one of the most ardent and consistent users of mantra. Mantra is done for a purpose and is sacred. Mantras should never be done casually or irreverently\, and students benefit most by having a teacher initiate them into the use of mantra. \nJoin us in chanting Vedic sanskrit mantras for the sheer joy of it—as well as the transformation that they bring. \nInstruction will be provided.\nBeginners are encouraged.\nDrop-ins are welcome.\n$10.00 suggested donation. \nfacebook.com
