SUMMARY:Richard's Studio-Open House
DESCRIPTION:How many people truly get to follow their dream?\nI did.\nI’ve always lived near a body of water and have always been a beachcomber.\nMy dream was to figure out how to make a living off the beach.\nI did.\nI moved to San Juan Island in 1980 and immediately began scouring the beaches for wild looking wood\, and there was plenty. But what to do with it?\nThe answer came in the person of Mike Moss\, a woodcraft artist\, fellow beachcomber\, and creator of driftwood bandsaw boxes which he marketed at the Pike Place Market.\nWe met. He saw my driftwood stash\, heard my dream and taught me the basics of bandsaw box making. With a modicum of creativity and skill plus a whole lotta marketing experience\, I launched False Bay Boxes in 1982. In the proceeding years I sold every piece that was put into the marketplace.\nWe moved to Whatcom County in 1987 and kept making boxes until about 8 years ago when I “retired” from the art and craft scene.\nMy hiatus is over. I needed a break. It was perfect.\nI am living my dream with new inspiration.\nThe False Bay Boxes brand has been retired and my work will now be under my own name. My focus is on creating large\, live-edge\, sculptural boxes carved in outrageous wood for the high-end woodcraft and art market. More moderate sized/priced pieces will only be available during the holidays.\nTo wit: I am hosting my first ever Studio Open House to reintroduce myself to the local art community. This special event takes place the first Saturday in December\, the 7th\, from 10am-5pm. Newly created pieces will be for sale. Refreshments will be served all day long. \nIt is a joy to follow your bliss. I did\, and am joyful. \nRichard Nevels

SUMMARY:Interlacements
DESCRIPTION:The documentary Interlacements will be shown at the Jansen Art Center on Saturday\, Feb. 1\, at 4 PM in the Chamber Hall. This movie was produced by Marilyn Romatka\, a fiber artist and long-time friend of the Jansen Textile Studio\, and her husband Rainer. They will be present to introduce the film and answer questions after the screening. \nThe film highlights the connections made through the fiber arts: the Seattle Weavers Guild and the Seattle Children’s hospital\, the deep emotional pull of a finely made rug by Marji Fiddler\, more about John Beard and the wonderful robes he has made in the tradition of coastal native people\, the link between a guitar player and the woman who made his guitar strap\, and our very own local group of weavers who have had long and enduring friendships through their fiber interests. \nThis is a new take on hand-weaving\, focusing not on how threads come together\, but rather how lives are joined when people are touched by cloth.

SUMMARY:Always Look on The Bright Side of Mental Illness
DESCRIPTION:For the month of February Make.shift will offer Bellingham the opportunity to “stick their tongues out to distress.” We aim to explore the jovial comradery that is created by a chemical imbalance. We called out to artists in the community to share work inspired by living with mental illnesses\, with a comedically defiant twist. As many of us here in Washington state can relate to mental illness\, most of us can probably identify with the utter absurdity of the obstacles associated with mental illness. The lighthearted\, sometimes silly acceptance of the realities we face\, oftentimes guide us through what can be otherwise devastating.\nMake.shift welcomes guest curator\, Javier Berzal de Dios\, for this exhibition. Javier is an associate professor of Art History at Western Washington University. His work explores connections between visual arts\, philosophy\, and literature. His last publication was Visual Experiences in Cinquecento Theatrical Spaces\, a book that studies Renaissance theatre architecture and design focusing on the spectators’ experiences. “Art and humor have always\n(more)\nbeen reliable allies in my struggles with mental illness\,” says Javier\, “and I hope to bring cheer and encouragement to our community with this exhibition.”\nDuring February’s especially dark days\, “join us in finding the humorous and joyful that hides behind the turmoil and gloom.”\nIf you are struggling with mental illness\, please know there are people who can help. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has a list of resources available on their website: nami.org/Find-Support. We love you and you are not alone. \nThe opening will be on Art Walk Friday\, February 7th from 6-10pm. For more information about the Art Walk or Make.Shift please visit our website at makeshiftproject.com or contact Gallery Director\, Gabrielle Olson\, at gallery@makeshiftproject.com.\nAbout Make.shift: Make.Shift Art Space is a 501 ©3 nonprofit DIY venue dedicated to providing a space for all-ages art and music in Bellingham. The 8\,000-square-foot space includes 21 studios\, an award-winning gallery\, a live music performance space and a low-power radio station KZAX 94.9. We are an all-ages space dedicated to a policy of no booze\, no drugs\, no jerks.\nAccessibility Information: Make.Shift strives to create a safe and inviting space for all to enjoy and utilize. There are two ramps at Make.Shift: one at the front door that provides access to the gallery\, office\, upstairs studios\, and bathrooms. All of these doorways are 3’ wide. The other leads to the basement and provides access to the stage and main concert area. This doorway is 3’ 5”.\n(more)\nMake.shift February Art Walk\nWHAT: “Always Look on The Bright Side of Mental Illness”\nWHEN: Friday\, February 7th\, 2020 6-10PM\nWHERE: Make.Shift Art Space 306 Flora St. in downtown Bellingham\nCOST: Free!\nCONTACT: Gabrielle Olson gallery@makeshiftproject.com\nIMAGES: https://www.canva.com/join/big-pods-speedboat\nFACEBOOK: facebook.com/makeshiftproject\nINSTAGRAM: @make.shiftartspace\nKILL DATE: Saturday\, Feb 28\, 2020
