SUMMARY:Permanent Immigrant: The Life and Art of Italo Scanga - Lecture & Book Signing with Guest Curator Matthew Kangas
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Museum of Northwest Art for a lecture and book signing with Matthew Kangas\, curator of the exhibition\, Permanent Immigrant: Italo Scanga in the Dale and Leslie Chihuly Collection. \nItalo Scanga’s biographer\, Matthew Kangas\, author of Italo Scanga 1932-2001\, will share stories about the artist’s childhood\, emigration to the US\, and travels back and forth to Italy after his higher education in America and subsequent university art school teaching jobs. \nIllustrated with photographs from the Italo Scanga Foundation archive and his book\, Kangas will explain the artist’s extraordinarily wide education—how he graduated from American high school in two years\, received a BA in one\, and attended graduate school at Michigan State University to receive his MFA soon thereafter. His teaching jobs on the East Coast at Rhode Island School of Design and Temple University in Philadelphia coincided with his first marriage and growth of his family. After moving to the West Coast and remarrying\, Scanga intensified his friendship with Dale Chihuly and became a regular artist in residence at Pilchuck Glass School. While there\, he met and invited many prominent contemporary artists who participated in the process of integrating glass into contemporary art\, perhaps his greatest legacy. \nCost: Free for members | $5 suggested donation for non-members\nAs always\, admission to the Museum is free. Want to become a member? Join us today. \nPlease RSVP using the link below.\nhttps://www.monamuseum.org/events/permanent-immigrant-lecture \nQuestions? Email us at education@musuemofnwart.org.

SUMMARY:The Reverend Shawn Amos
DESCRIPTION:The Reverend Shawn Amos \nMcIntyre Hall Presents \nFriday\, March 3 at 7:30pm \nBlues and roots singer\, The Reverend Shawn Amos\, is an exhilarating entertainer whose performances are filled with the foot-stomping\, call-and-response energy of 1960s’ Chicago blues shows. The son of music agent turned entrepreneur\, Wally “Famous” Amos and R&B nightclub singer\, Shirlee May\, Amos was raised in 1970s Los Angeles watching musical legends like Marvin Gaye and Quincy Jones at work. Amos began releasing a series of semi-autobiographical albums in the 1990s. Exploring\, chronicling\, and preserving black American music led him to the American blues songbook and a commitment to keeping this great American art form alive. Just as he has on stages throughout the world\, The Rev leaves a lot on the floor: the breath into the bullet microphone\, the laughter\, the fret buzz\, the defiant foot stomp – everything reverberating in a spirit-filled space\, offering soul sustenance as only a well-crafted song can. \nJoining The Rev on stage are Christopher Thomas (bass) and Doctor Roberts (guitar).

DESCRIPTION:Contact: Xandra S. Local artists were tasked with reading\nthis year’s chosen book\, The Cold Millions by Jess Walter. Artists are then invited to create works inspired\nby their reading of the book. Also featured in the gallery are works by Kiki Cardarelli\, Harmoney\nDevauney\, Lyz Stamen\, Jessica Silver\, and Rupert Ayton. \nKiki Cardarelli is a photographer\, using Black and White film and traditional darkroom techniques to print her\nimages. In addition\, she uses translucent oil paints to hand color the images. This technique gives the\nphotographs a soft and realistic feeling that looks “nothing like” color photography\, as it leaves the eye room to\nimagine a new reality. \nHarmoney Devaney is an 18-year-old indigenous youth activist\, member of the Whatcom Focused Youth\nMovement (WFYM)\, and currently sits on the board for WHRTF. \nLyz Stamen’s work in this series “Woman Music” showcases a variety of performers in their element- on\nstage. The vibrancy of color reflects each musician’s style\, and strong strokes depict their individual\nemotions. \nRupert Ayton displays an oil on canvas series that is inspired by an underlying social commentary\,\nexploring America’s past affair with motorized vehicles\, the good and the bad\, revisiting their aesthetic\nand social attraction. \nJessica Silver hopes to introduce you to the same sculpture or piece of jewelry she sees when she looks\nat each unique stone. \nAllied Arts is a non-profit gallery\, proceeds from all sales go towards supporting the arts in our community.\nFor more information visit www.alliedarts.org or contact Xandra Blackburn at 360-676-8548 x102 or\nxandra@alliedarts.org.
