SUMMARY:Rick Steves: Travel as a Political Act
DESCRIPTION:Americans accustomed to global travel find themselves on uncharted ground today — as citizens of a nation whose president is hostile to the governments of countries most visited by Americans. What does this recent rupture of longstanding ties with U.S. allies mean for Americans who travel overseas? America’s foremost travel writer\, Rick Steves\, believes there’s more to travel than good food and fun in the sun. By venturing out of their comfort zones\, American travelers can gain an empathy for the other 96 percent of humanity and a better understanding of the interconnectedness of today’s world. In a provocative slideshow lecture\, Rick draws from lessons learned in a lifetime of travel to illustrate how\, when Americans “travel as a political act\,” they come home with the greatest of all souvenirs: a broader perspective.

SUMMARY:"Hot Hardy Plants for Super Shady Gardens"
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to welcome Heronswood Garden’s Director\, Dr. Ross Bayton\, for a talk on the best that shade gardening has to offer. Expand your plant palette to include shade-loving plants that are grown in the famous garden\, that is known for its rare plants and cutting-edge design. As with many Pacific Northwest gardens\, shade is a predominant feature\, and the garden utilizes a unique palette of plants to create beauty under the trees. Dr Bayton “will reveal a wealth of richly hued and elaborately textured plants that flourish in various shade conditions.” \nLondon-born botanist and gardener Dr. Ross Bayton gained his PhD at the Royal Botanic Gardens\, Kew. He’s the author of several books on horticulture\, including New Trees: Introductions to Cultivation (with John Grimshaw)\, Plant Families: A Guide for Gardeners and Botanists (with Simon Maugham)\, and most recently The Gardener’s Botanical: An Encyclopedia of Latin Plant Names. Formerly the Gardening Editor of the UK’s best-selling gardening periodical\, BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine\, he is now the Director of the world-renowned Heronswood Garden in Kingston\, WA\, and gardens on 5 acres in Bremerton.\nTo learn more about Heronswood\, go to http://www.heronswood.com/

SUMMARY:Carbon Flows: A Collaborative Talk with Artist Suze Woolf & Scientist Dave Peterson
DESCRIPTION:Carbon is integral to every aspect of life on earth\, yet its increasing presence in our atmosphere is driving unprecedented climate change\, contributing to more areas burned by wildfires. Artist Suze Woolf began painting large portraits of individual burned trees in 2008 as she noticed increasing burned-over areas in her favorite wildernesses. Dr. David L. Peterson has studied climate change\, fire\, and ecological disturbances over a long research career. Together they will show how their respective disciplines create a more holistic perspective on the effects of climate on forest ecosystems. \nRSVP at https://www.monamuseum.org/events/carbonflows

SUMMARY:Northwest Mushroomers Association Annual Wild Mushroom Show
DESCRIPTION:On October 22nd\, 2023\, after a four-year hiatus\, the Northwest Mushroomers Association is hosting their 31st Annual Wild Mushroom Show at the Viking Union at WWU from 11:00am to 5:00pm. Admission is $10 for adults\, $7 for students and seniors\, $5 for NMA members\, and free for children under 12! Over 300 varieties of mushrooms grow in our area and many will be on display\, identified to genus and species\, with edibility recommendations. The displays will be fresh\, colorful\, and amazing. Along with mushroom-related book sales\, a children’s table\, a table with information about dyeing fibers with mushrooms\, local vendors\, and three different presentations by professional mycologists in an adjacent meeting space\, (and so much more!)\, you can also bring in a mushroom or two for our IDers to identify for you and answer questions you might have. Mushroom club membership\, should you choose to join us\, will allow you to register for mushroom ID classes and attend forays and meetings in the coming year. Knowing which mushroom one is searching for\, and differentiating fungi can be confusing. Yet there is a path through this complex world of fungi. Come by to observe and learn about the incredible diversity of PNW mushrooms that might even be growing right in your backyard. We look forward to meeting you!
