SUMMARY:World Premiere of "Love Letters"
DESCRIPTION:Join Western Washington University in partnership with Cascadia International Women’s Film Festival in welcoming Catharine R. Stimpson\, Elizabeth Wood and Greta Schiller for “Love Letters”: A Film Premiere and Panel Discussion on Friday\, March 8th\, 2024 at 7:30PM at Western Washington University’s Performing Arts Center Mainstage. \nThe 39-minute documentary is a profound story of love and activism between renowned professor\, feminist scholar and Bellingham native\, Dr. Catharine R. Stimpson and musicologist Dr. Elizabeth Wood at the forefront of the narrative. The film highlights Wood’s landmark legal victory in Australia during the 1970s to gain custody of her children.\nIn the film\, both women\, now in their 80s\, reflect on their experiences during a time when living authentically\, loving apologetically\, and fighting for fundamental human rights was considered radical. Motivated by the current younger generation’s noble demonstrations of defiance\, Wood and Stimpson will share their story with our community. \nWatch the trailer here:\n“Love Letters” Trailer (with captions) (youtube.com) \nDiscussion after Film \nThe film will be followed by a panel discussion with the Stimpson and Wood and director Schiller. Audrey Sager\, CASCADIA Board President whose New York City law practiced focused on matrimonial law\, will moderate. \nStimpson is known nationally for her groundbreaking contributions to the study of women and gender. She is a founder of feminist criticism and the feminist journal\, Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society.
