SUMMARY:Kulshan Chorus presents Considering Matthew Shepard
DESCRIPTION:“Considering Matthew Shepard” is a Grammy-nominated three-part oratorio composed by Craig Hella Johnson. The work is a powerful and compassionate musical response to the murder of Matthew Shepard. On October 6\, 1998\, University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard was kidnapped\, tied to a fence\, beaten\, and left to die\, in what became one of America’s most notorious anti-gay hate crimes. Shepard’s murder ultimately led to the creation of the Matthew Shepard Foundation and provided a catalyst for legislation that expanded the definition of a hate crime to include sexual orientation. \nThis three-part fusion oratorio incorporates a variety of musical styles and a wide range of soulful texts by poets including Hildegard of Bingen and Rumi. Also included are passages from Matthew’s personal journal and writings from his parents Judy and Dennis Shepard. While parts might be triggering for some\, this oratorio is ultimately an uplifting celebration of the power of light over darkness and love over fear.

SUMMARY:The Nordic Fiddlers Bloc
DESCRIPTION:Nordic Fiddlers Bloc \nMcIntyre Hall Presents \nFriday\, April 28 7:30pm \nThe Nordic Fiddlers Bloc is a fiddle trio that masterfully blends the traditions of Norway\, Sweden and the Shetland Islands. Olav Luksengård Mjelva (Norway)\, Anders Hall (Sweden) and Kevin Henderson (Shetland Islands)\, have swiftly gained a reputation for their gripping and unique blend of fiddle music since the inception of the Bloc in early 2009. They maintain a firm focus on the traditions of their home while developing a sound that has been described as “meaningful”\, ”intense” and “invigorating”. Their clever use of harmony\, rhythm\, riffs & bass lines creates a sound that leaves the listener enthralled but at the same time dumbfounded that the sound only comes from three fiddles. \n“Seldom before can three fiddlers have sounded so well matched as the Nordic Fiddlers Bloc. And seldom before can three fiddles have sounded so much like four and at times five instruments without using electronic trickery.” ~ The Herald \nJoin us for a pre-concert talk 45 minutes prior to the concert.

SUMMARY:Sona Jobarteh
DESCRIPTION:Sona Jobarteh \nMcIntyre Hall Presents \nFriday\, March 31 at 7:30pm \nGambian vocalist\, kora master\, and multi-instrumentalist Sona Jobarteh is a pioneering musical icon whose artistry is poised between the preservation of her rich cultural heritage and an accessible modern style. Born into a griot family\, she is the first female artist within the more than 700-year old tradition to become a professional virtuoso on the kora. \nThe spirit of Sona Jobarteh’s musical work stands on the mighty shoulders of The West African Griot Tradition; she is a living archive of the Gambian people. The Gambian-British musician is the first professional woman kora player from one of the five principal kora-playing griot families from West Africa. The kora\, a harp-like instrument\, has been passed down for centuries among West African musical storytelling families\, called griots. For much of that time\, West African custom only allowed men to be paid for playing the kora. Sona Jobarteh changed that tradition. She began playing the Kora at age 3 and has performed all over the world. The extent of her recognition today is evidenced by more than 22 million+ viewers on YouTube and considerable numbers on other digital platforms. \nJoin us for a pre-concert talk 45 minutes prior to the concert.

SUMMARY:The Jeremiahs
DESCRIPTION:The Jeremiahs \nMcIntyre Hall Presents \nFriday\, March 17 at 7:30pm \nThe Jeremiahs formed in 2013 to become a welcome gopher in the garden of Celtic music. The son of music agent turned entrepreneur\, Wally “Famous” Amos and R&B nightclub singer\, Shirlee May\, Amos was raised in 1970s Los Angeles watching musical legends like Marvin Gaye and Quincy Jones at work. Amos began releasing a series of semi-autobiographical albums in the 1990s. Exploring\, chronicling\, and preserving black American music led him to the American blues songbook and a commitment to keeping this great American art form alive. Just as he has on stages throughout the world\, The Rev leaves a lot on the floor: the breath into the bullet microphone\, the laughter\, the fret buzz\, the defiant foot stomp – everything reverberating in a spirit-filled space\, offering soul sustenance as only a well-crafted song can. \nJoining The Rev on stage are Christopher Thomas (bass) and Doctor Roberts (guitar).

SUMMARY:Tony Furtado Trio
DESCRIPTION:Tony Furtado Trio \nMcIntyre Hall Presents \nFriday\, February 3 at 7:30pm \nVery few musicians of any stripe so personify a musical genre as completely as Tony Furtado embodies Americana roots music.
