SUMMARY:The Reverend Shawn Amos
DESCRIPTION:The Reverend Shawn Amos \nMcIntyre Hall Presents \nFriday\, March 3 at 7:30pm \nBlues and roots singer\, The Reverend Shawn Amos\, is an exhilarating entertainer whose performances are filled with the foot-stomping\, call-and-response energy of 1960s’ Chicago blues shows. The son of music agent turned entrepreneur\, Wally “Famous” Amos and R&B nightclub singer\, Shirlee May\, Amos was raised in 1970s Los Angeles watching musical legends like Marvin Gaye and Quincy Jones at work. Amos began releasing a series of semi-autobiographical albums in the 1990s. Exploring\, chronicling\, and preserving black American music led him to the American blues songbook and a commitment to keeping this great American art form alive. Just as he has on stages throughout the world\, The Rev leaves a lot on the floor: the breath into the bullet microphone\, the laughter\, the fret buzz\, the defiant foot stomp – everything reverberating in a spirit-filled space\, offering soul sustenance as only a well-crafted song can. \nJoining The Rev on stage are Christopher Thomas (bass) and Doctor Roberts (guitar).

SUMMARY:The Jeremiahs
DESCRIPTION:The Jeremiahs \nMcIntyre Hall Presents \nFriday\, March 17 at 7:30pm \nThe Jeremiahs formed in 2013 to become a welcome gopher in the garden of Celtic music. The Jeremiahs is an Irish folk band that came together with the goal of writing\, composing and performing folk songs and music. With a wonderful mixture of newly composed songs and tunes in the folk genre and a well selected catalogue of older folk songs\, they are sure to rouse all the emotions. So get out and don’t miss them! \nThey shape their sound with Dubliner Joe Gibney’s beautiful vocals and some whistle (not at the same time); Julien Bruneteau from Brittany who plays whistle and flute; Dublin based James Ryan who holds down the rhythm section on guitar and bouzouki and a few choice effects pedals; and finally Niamh Varian Barry\, whose fiddle playing and singing will be familiar to many as she was lead singer with Solas for years. \n“One of the freshest bands in Irish traditional music” ~ Séan Laffey Irish Music Magazine

SUMMARY:Sona Jobarteh
DESCRIPTION:Sona Jobarteh \nMcIntyre Hall Presents \nFriday\, March 31 at 7:30pm \nGambian vocalist\, kora master\, and multi-instrumentalist Sona Jobarteh is a pioneering musical icon whose artistry is poised between the preservation of her rich cultural heritage and an accessible modern style. Born into a griot family\, she is the first female artist within the more than 700-year old tradition to become a professional virtuoso on the kora. \nThe spirit of Sona Jobarteh’s musical work stands on the mighty shoulders of The West African Griot Tradition; she is a living archive of the Gambian people. The Gambian-British musician is the first professional woman kora player from one of the five principal kora-playing griot families from West Africa. The kora\, a harp-like instrument\, has been passed down for centuries among West African musical storytelling families\, called griots. For much of that time\, West African custom only allowed men to be paid for playing the kora. Sona Jobarteh changed that tradition. She began playing the Kora at age 3 and has performed all over the world. The extent of her recognition today is evidenced by more than 22 million+ viewers on YouTube and considerable numbers on other digital platforms. \nJoin us for a pre-concert talk 45 minutes prior to the concert.
