SUMMARY:Ellen J Brown Painting Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Ellen J. Brown is showing oil paintings at BastowDesign Studio #208 in The Pickford Artists Studios above The Historic Pickford Cinema 1318 Bay St Bellingham\, Oct 6th during First Friday Art Walk 6-10 AND Oct 28th during the Old Town Art Stroll Saturday 12-5\nEllen studied art history\, printmaking and painting at The Art Institute of Chicago and WWU. At the Institute\, she took her first formal art history class and saw Paleolithic and Neolithic for the first time. It continues to inspire her work. In Neolithic European cultures\, bones\, beads\, bowls\, lineal marks\, tools\, statues — all accompanied the dead for their journeys to the underworld. They were often meant only for the dead and intended to stay buried and unseen. These sacred forms and marks of Neolithic cultures inform our understanding of lost cultures\, and also let us know how close we are to our ancestors. Ellen’s richly hued oil paintings examine what is left behind to accompany the dead to the next world.\nEllen works in oil and acrylic paints. She paints plein aire\, figurative works and landscape painting in and out of her home studio. A life long learner\, she takes art workshops several times a year and enjoys discussions of many art disciplines with teachers and students. Additionally\, Ellen offers her skills to local law enforcement agencies for forensic drawings —“police sketches”.\nAs the cold nights descend\, and we shiver with the season\, lean into cryptic images of what we thought would stay buried and join us to see Ellen’s work.

Local artists were tasked with reading\nthis year’s chosen book\, The Cold Millions by Jess Walter. Artists are then invited to create works inspired\nby their reading of the book. Also featured in the gallery are works by Kiki Cardarelli\, Harmoney\nDevauney\, Lyz Stamen\, Jessica Silver\, and Rupert Ayton. \nKiki Cardarelli is a photographer\, using Black and White film and traditional darkroom techniques to print her\nimages. In addition\, she uses translucent oil paints to hand color the images. This technique gives the\nphotographs a soft and realistic feeling that looks “nothing like” color photography\, as it leaves the eye room to\nimagine a new reality. \nHarmoney Devaney is an 18-year-old indigenous youth activist\, member of the Whatcom Focused Youth\nMovement (WFYM)\, and currently sits on the board for WHRTF. \nLyz Stamen’s work in this series “Woman Music” showcases a variety of performers in their element- on\nstage. The vibrancy of color reflects each musician’s style\, and strong strokes depict their individual\nemotions. \nRupert Ayton displays an oil on canvas series that is inspired by an underlying social commentary\,\nexploring America’s past affair with motorized vehicles\, the good and the bad\, revisiting their aesthetic\nand social attraction. \nJessica Silver hopes to introduce you to the same sculpture or piece of jewelry she sees when she looks\nat each unique stone. \nAllied Arts is a non-profit gallery\, proceeds from all sales go towards supporting the arts in our community.\nFor more information visit www.alliedarts.org or contact Xandra Blackburn at 360-676-8548 x102 or\nxandra@alliedarts.org.
