SUMMARY:April 2020 Art Walk at Make.Shift Gallery: “Playful Creatures”
DESCRIPTION:April 2020 Art Walk at Make.Shift Gallery:\n“Playful Creatures”\nFor the month of April Make.Shift invites you to step outside of the gallery and into an environment that welcomes curiosity and play. Spring has sprung and it’s time to invite your inner child to Playful Creatures\, a partially interactive exhibit showing a combination of local\, regional\, and international artists. The exhibit is focussed on spreading a spirit of playfulness and imagination. Our featured artist this month\, Sophia Munic\, originally from Minneapolis\, moved to Washington to pursue an education in Sculpture and French Studies at The University of Puget Sound. She is now based out of Tacoma and has become a fixture in Tacoma’s local art community. Her work is intended to create “a warm sense of nostalgia” using bright colored materials and toy-like forms. She is quoted saying “Creature like shapes reignite a sense of wonder when trying to figure out what exactly they are and how to place them in our memories. Reconnecting to these memories is an act of imagination. […] To rekindle that sense of imagination I create objects of play.” Due to her emphasis on play\, her featured installation is fully interactive. It is intended to immerse you in nostalgic interactions. A drawing table will be set up for viewers to color in\ncoloring pages or draw their own responses to her work.\nThis exhibition will display work from several artists.\nKeiko Scott\, a BFA graduate from WWU’s art department\, now based out of Tokyo\, Japan\, will be displaying multiple mediums of work including fiber and video. Their work touches on personal experiences from their own childhood as well as their queer identity.\nBellingham artist\, Spiderleg\, an Atlanta transplant\, will be showing work from a series of unstretched canvas acrylic paintings. The subjects are creepy monsters and critters painted in the most delightfully vibrant color palettes.\nSuzie Marco\, based out of Bellingham\, is a current WWU BFA student. She will be showing oversized plush art that references both play and nostalgia.\nLily Foss\, a Bellingham based textile artist\, is also a student in Western’s art department. Her work has been described as visual equivalents to the Mother Goose stories. This exhibition displays her current work in textile animation and plush paintings.\nJoin us on our journey down memory lane for a show bound to bring you back to a colorful past.\nThe opening will be on Art Walk Friday\, April 3rd from 6-10pm. For more information about the Art Walk or Make.Shift please visit our website at makeshiftproject.com or contact Gallery Director\, Gabrielle Olson\, at gallery@makeshiftproject.com.\nAbout Make.shift: Make.Shift Art Space is a 501 ©3 nonprofit DIY venue dedicated to providing a space for all-ages art and music in Bellingham. SUMMARY:Brooke Borcherding Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Over the past 10 years as an exhibiting artist Brooke has been able to develop a unique style that is not quite catagorizable. With a background in plein air (on site) landscape painting\, she has gained an intuitive affinity for color and dynamic composition. Brilliantly colored blocks of color cascade across the canvas\, creating a wonderfully pixelated image of urban or rural environments that shimmer with dynamic energy. Borcherding says these “deconstructions” aim to “shed light on the beauty of ordered chaos.” Brooke has most recently been awarded a prestigious prize for best oil/acrylic painting at the 2018 Carmel Plein Air Competition. She is nationally and internationally collected and shows at galleries in 5 different states- Washington\, California\, Oregon\, Utah\, and Maine.\nOpening reception Friday April 3 from 6:00-9:00 pm\, show runs through May 30th.

SUMMARY:Make.Shift March 2020 Art Walk: “And in That Moment”
DESCRIPTION:For the month of March Make.Shift Gallery would like to present “And in That Moment: Works by Aunna Moriarty.” We will be showcasing Moriarty’s photography in a solo show exhibit that defines the artistic process. Moriarty resides in Seattle\, Washington and is a photographer and model. Her work has a sharp focus on fashion and performance used as a means to investigate the human focus.\nThe Artist emphasizes that this specific project\, “And in that moment\,” is a way to materialize her distorted experiences of people\, places\, colors\, and time. This project is not meant to be a literal translation of dreamland as there are often missing pieces and interruptions throughout the night but rather\, it seizes the lingering emotions and disturbances released from these ephemeral moments. Armed with a deep curiosity of textiles\, color theory\, lighting\, and a love affair with vintage wear\, she is able to capture the true beauty of the feminine archetype. Moriarty is a graduate of the BFA program at Seattle University in photography and has said that she is passionate about education in the arts.\nThe opening will be on Art Walk Friday\, March 6th from 6-10pm.
